Working with young anglers
The Tolmin Fishing Club has around 40 junior members. For the club’s future, the involvement of different generations, especially the youth, is essential. In the early work with young members in the 1990s, the main goal was to teach them how to catch and release fish. They even practiced fly fishing techniques on dry land. The initiator of this youth program was the unforgettable Dušan Peršič – Pele, and today the juniors are guided by mentors Suzana Kobal and Erik Golob.
For young members, we organize fly-tying workshops, fly fishing sessions with mentors on our rivers, and during the holidays, a youth fishing camp with various activities and fishing. The young members also participate in fly fishing and casting competitions, but the most important aspects are good relationships and the time they spend together.

Casting
Casting is a lesser-known but very attractive sport. The head of the casting section at the Tolmin Fishing Club is Tomo Sotenšek. In the early 1990s, the Tolmin Fishing Club began to take competitive casting seriously. In recent years, it has regularly organized such competitions in dry fly fishing skills for the Slovenian national championship. The club can also boast of organizing the European and World Youth Championships.
Over the years, both juniors and members have regularly qualified for the Slovenian national team. They have achieved notable results, such as a gold medal at the European Championship, a bronze medal at the European Youth Championship, and a gold medal at the Casting World Cup.
Cleanup campaign
An annual activity of the club is the cleanup campaign. It is organized throughout the entire area of operation and management of the Tolmin Fishing Club. Collection points are usually in Bovec, Kobarid, Tolmin, Most na Soči, and Grahovo.
In 2019, waste was collected along the banks of the Soča, Učja, Nadiža, Tolminka, Idrijca, Bača, and Trebuščica rivers. The majority of the 226 participants were club members, joined by some friends and relatives. For all participants, a warm meal is organized after the campaign, along with the distribution of fishing permits for members.
Cormorant deterrence
In accordance with the permit issued by the Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning – ARSO for disturbing and removing cormorants from nature (No. 35601-74/2017-13), and following the decision of the general assembly of the Tolmin Fishing Club, each club member is required to complete 5 working hours during the winter season observing and scaring away cormorants. This activity is primarily aimed at protecting grayling waters and marble trout spawning grounds. Together, we strive to preserve more fish for the next fishing season. While scaring away cormorants, members also observe other waterbirds. The scaring activities are carried out according to specified schedules and river sections, and in coordination with fisheries wardens.
Members report their activities and observations to RD Tolmin, which maintains a collective record and forwards a summary report to the Fishing Association of Slovenia (which then submits it to the relevant ministries).
