Salmo trutta fario

Brown trout

The brown trout is not a native species in our waters; it was introduced at the beginning of the 20th century. It successfully hybridizes with the marble trout, and their offspring are also fertile.

This is the reason why brown trout pose a threat to marble trout, and why their stocking is no longer permitted in the Adriatic river basin in Slovenia. Except for five locations with pure marble trout populations, brown trout inhabit all other waters in the fishing district managed by the Tolmin Fishing Club.

Brown trout primarily feed on bottom organisms and aquatic insects, while larger individuals are mainly piscivorous. In our waters, brown trout spawn from mid-December to the end of January. The lake form of brown trout spawns from the end of October to the beginning of December.

In our waters, brown trout can reach up to 70 centimeters in length and weigh up to 6 kilograms.
