Salmo trutta marmoratus

Marble trout

Simbol divje lepote reke Soče

The marble trout (Salmo marmoratus) is the queen of our waters — a unique and native species found only in the Soča River basin. Its characteristic marbled pattern and silver-gray color reflect the pure, wild flow shaped by the alpine valleys and karst gorges of the Soča region.

The marble trout was once the only trout species inhabiting our waters. It is an endemic fish of the Adriatic river basin. In our waters, five populations of pure marble trout have been preserved.

Based on external appearance — phenotype — and also on genetic profile, we distinguish between two types of marble trout. Trout from the Zadlaščica type have the characteristic marbled body pattern, with red coloration rarely present. Trout from the Idrijca type, in addition to the characteristic marbling, also display red coloration in the form of spots and dots, most commonly along the lateral line.

After its calm flow through the Bovec basin, the Soča turns into a wild torrent below Srpenica, rushing between rocks and over rapids, catching its breath in deep pools before calming again near Kobarid. From there, it flows gently between white gravel banks toward Tolmin.

Below Kobarid, additional fish species join those already inhabiting the Soča, including chub, barbel, Italian spirlin, European minnow, Mediterranean barbel, and occasional tench. The Italian nase can also be found throughout this section.

The marble trout inhabits all waters of our fishing district. Smaller marble trout feed on bottom organisms and aquatic insects, while larger individuals are mainly piscivorous. They spawn from the end of October to the beginning of January.

Marble trout in our waters can reach impressive sizes and weights. The largest marble trout caught so far measured 120 centimeters and weighed 25 kilograms.

Marble Trout Festival

The Marble Trout Festival, organized by RD Tolmin, is a celebration of nature, fishing, and cuisine, dedicated to preserving the native marble trout and promoting sustainable coexistence with the river.
